Day 11 - Sunday 29th March

Last night the clocks went forward one hour - so that's one hour less of lockdown. Even though it's only an hour, the change of time in spring and autumn always messes with my body clock and I'm up earlier than I really wanted to be. I had big plans to get a lot done today but I'm feeling tired and decide to cut myself some slack. I manage to get a little gardening done, which is good - that means I've planted everything now that I wanted to, apart from things it's not time for yet.

I spend some time on the PC - first installing first an Android emulator and then House Party then retrieving some photos from the cloud and backing them up on my external drive. The photos are of a trip to Tanzania three years ago and it's lovely to see them again. People have been sharing photos of beaches in a bid to spread happiness on Facebook and I upload one from Zanzibar. I also add it to Zoom for use as a virtual background, which will take off the pressure to keep my office tidy! I message my cousin in Canada to see how everybody is, and also exchange messages with my bestie who has developed a cough. She's feeling quite unwell but has no fever and so doesn't suspect coronavirus.

It has been announced today that things will get worse before they get better and that we should expect the current measures to be in place for a while, perhaps until June. This doesn't surprise me and I'm already resigned to it. Deaths here have exceeded a thousand now and we're being told that the virus won't peak for another week or two. Australia has announced that no more than two people can gather outside the home. In the United States they are now predicting between 100,000 and 200,000 deaths altogether. The number are alarming but, again, based on what we've observed in Italy and Spain not surprising - and at least the death rate in Italy has now begun to fall. Hubby has checked on our former au pair in Spain and she's also well and isolating but worried about her Mum who has to go to her job in a food factory.

I watch CNN for a while to get a sense of how things are in the States and was surprised to see Joe Wicks, a UK-based fitness instructor, being interviewed. He's been doing a 9am online fitness session, primarily for children and their families, and it has been picked up all over the world. He's donating everything he makes from his YouTube channel to support the NHS - just one example of the lovely things that people are doing in response to this crisis. Today I have put together a care package to post to my daughter's friend who works as a nurse. Her nose has become so chafed by wearing a mask that it was an infection risk so she's been relocated to the "donning room" where staff put on and remove their protective gear. Hopefully some bath and body treats will be a welcome touch of luxury when she's off duty, as well as reminding her how much she's appreciated.

Hubby drops a note round to our elderly neighbours to say that we're happy to pick up groceries or prescriptions for them, although he observes that with no new online delivery slots available and restrictions on numbers of products to prevent panic-buying, helping others forces people to make more visits to the shops, putting them at additional risk. This evening we are using the last of our 00 flour for home-made pizza, but I'm hoping we'll be able to get some online before too long.

Today I am grateful for memories of travel adventures.
