Day 15 - Thursday 2nd April
Shit just got real. Woke up late after a restless night to a message from my best friend who has been ill with a cough for a few days. She was waiting for a call back from the paramedics because she has a tight chest and feels breathless. She had been insisting it was just a regular cough, but now she's feeling worse and she's scared it's coronavirus. She lives alone so there's nobody to take care of her and of course I'm not allowed to go to her. She's tired and needs to rest so I stop messaging and look for distractions. I've decided to avoid all news, broadcast and online, today as I'm feeling anxious.
My yoga teacher pops up on Facebook live with a lovely meditation so I spend some time trying to still my mind and focus on the present. I attend a webinar about how the circular economy can help us deal with coronavirus and it's reassuring to feel that I'm part of something that might have some practical solutions both during and after the current crisis. Then grab some lunch and prepare dinner for this evening, as I have plans to do a yoga class and then meet friends online. I'm not feeling much like socialising, but I feel it will be good for my mental health if I do.
It's lovely to find on Facebook a video guide made by one of my travelling companions from South Africa a couple of years back, about the colony of meerkats she tends at Dubbo zoo in Australia. We visited the Kalahari Meerkat Project together and got to spend time with wild meerkats in their natural habitat. Travel seems like a distant memory at the moment and her video brings back some welcome memories.
Our groceries arrive - not everything we ordered but most of it and nothing major is missing. I still can't book a delivery slot for next week, but hubby has agreed to go out tomorrow; he's going to shop for our daughter as well. Then I attend a webinar about Net Zero featuring Sky and Formula One which is practically a CV-free zone.
I check back in with my sick friend and she's feeling a bit better - less breathless at least. She alarms me by reminding me who gets her cat if she dies, but I brush it off and remind her that she's beaten serious health scares before so she can beat this one too. I've been able to be beside her for those, though. A few of my friends have reported corona-like symptoms (without testing nobody is sure whether they actually have it), but the rest seem to be recovering.
I've got a busy evening ahead - singing, then yoga, then online socialising. Choir rehearsal is at 5.30 and we sing through the song in its entirety for the first time led by Gareth Malone - I'm Still Standing by Elton John seems an appropriate choice. I'm glad nobody else can hear me sing, and I don't think I'll be contributing a recording for the planned "performance" but it's fun. Then it's time for yoga, the end of which coincides with the "Clap for the NHS" at 8pm so we send them loving energy instead. I thought about leaving the class early to go outside and clap but there are no houses opposite us and high walls either side of our front garden, so it doesn't feel like we'd really be part of it.
I grab a bottle of prosecco and some crème de cassis and join two of my friends online for a drink and a chat, then heat up the chillis I made yesterday and eat with the family. It's pretty late and I'm tired. Today I am thankful for friendship.
