Day 29 - Thursday 16th April
Another good night's sleep so I'm at my desk by 9am and beginning my personal statement for another job application. It takes most of the morning to craft something suitable and while I'm working on it the blue sky outside is replaced by grey clouds. I listen to the news over lunch, which focuses on the likelihood of a further 3 weeks lockdown, accompanied by some adjustments to the brief the police force has about what's allowable. Apparently resting on a park bench during exercise is allowed, but sitting on a park bench to work is not. Driving to an open space for exercise is permissible, as long as the exercise takes significantly longer than the drive - no idea how anybody would police that! The most significant change is that people are allowed to stay with a friend for a week's respite to escape from a difficult situation at home. Domestic violence has increased during the restrictions, so this should be a lifeline for many.
Today I arrange two meetings, which after a whole week with an entirely empty diary feels like we're beginning to adapt properly to the new normal. Both are for voluntary work, but at least I'm doing something constructive. I am still applying for jobs but there seem to be fewer vacancies coming through now. I have registered with the NHS recruitment site, as they need people including all areas including admin and I'm sure my skills and experience would be useful.
Hubby reminds me that ten years ago today we were stranded in Istanbul by the dust cloud from the unpronounceable Icelandic volcano. That turned out to be an enjoyable experience for me - once we had worked out who would take care of our son, who had been on a skiing trip with the school and was returning by ferry, we got to explore parts of Istanbul we wouldn't otherwise have discovered. Through a combination of working from the hotel, repurposing snow days and claiming compensation from the airline we suffered no great inconvenience or financial loss. I realised then that I adapt quite quickly to uncontrollable circumstances, which is certainly helping me cope now.
My son emerges early enough for a late launch and is rewarded with Halloumi Caesar salad. Food is still a big preoccupation but given that I am eating just as much as usual - and possibly snacking a little more - I was bemused to find my pyjama trousers falling down so I weighed myself myself this morning and have lost half a stone. Today's delivery of a Degusta box is disappointing as one of the jars has smashed in transit but I manage to salvage some snacks from the wreckage. Dinner is beef and beer casserole for hubby and a Greek-inspired cauliflower casserole for my son and I. I prepare it ahead and it cooks while I'm doing my online yoga class.
Today I am grateful for sleep.
