Day 34 - Tuesday 21st April
Woke up about 6am and couldn't get back to sleep, so I'm at my desk by 8. I spend most of the morning working on social media assets for the climate change partnership for tomorrow's burst of promotion for the extension of the consultation period on the climate emergency strategy and action plan. I enjoy designing comms pieces and it doesn't take long to produce a suite of 8. I'm keen to get the chair's approval before sharing them with the rest of the board though and he's not online this morning; we have a meeting scheduled for 2pm anyway.
I grab some lunch and then attend a "lunch and learn" session which has Sam Conniff as the guest speaker. I'm excited to hear him as I thoroughly enjoyed his book "Be More Pirate" and this morning I read a really insightful article he had written about his reaction to the current crisis. A few minutes in the broadcast sound is replaced by an annoying hum - my PC has mutinied. I quickly log back into the zoom call via my phone, but it's hard to engage via chat on the tiny screen. Meanwhile, I reboot my PC and it finally finishes installing updates a couple of minutes before the event ends. Really frustrating.
I go straight to the Teams link the chair as sent me for the climate change partnership meeting but first it says I don't have permission then it refuses to add sound and video as apparently another app is using them - presumably zoom, although I've closed it down. We finally give up and have a 3-way phone call instead. After the call I get the go-ahead for the materials I prepared earlier and start setting them up on Hootsuite to be released at one hour intervals tomorrow. Then I go to find our hair clippers and am surprised to realise that we have a set of professional clippers still in their box; I find a video on YouTube and familiarise myself with the fundamentals of gents' hair cuts. I still have some social media preparation to do for my online shop, but it doesn't look like I'll have time - I haven't stopped all day.
We have arranged a Skype call with our daughter at 6 but when we try to connect my PC once again insists that another app is using the video camera - it turns out to be Teams but closing it down doesn't solve the problem - another restart is called for. When we finally get video working we spend half an hour chatting and watching our grandson bouncing from one activity to another … he's such a bundle of energy. He's walking with confidence and also knows many more words now. It's poignant to see him only online - I can't wait to see him live and in person.
I'm a bit late starting dinner but prepare two pasta dishes and we sit down to eat at about 8. The haircut takes place in the kitchen, as the floor can be swept easily, and starts well enough. Hubby puts cheesy music radio on and I joke about asking him where he's going for his holidays. At first I take off too little, and have to change guards and modify my technique to make more impact, but I begin to feel I'm getting the hang of it. Hubby is not convinced - he still doesn't think I'm taking enough off, but isn't keen on my suggestion to move to a smaller guard, and he's not keen on my technique of using scissors to trim round the ears before tidying up with the clippers. In the end he decides we're done even though I haven't really finished. I feel close to tears, but I don't think he notices.
Today I am grateful for the opportunity to see my grandson's beaming grin.
