Day 35 - Wednesday 22nd April

Earth Day today and an early start for me - I have to set up some tweets in Hootsuite to go out for the climate change partnership at hourly intervals, then I have a 9.30 meeting. After the meeting another call, then some social media activity to promote my online store during Earth Day. It's a busy one, and although the weather outside is lovely I stay focused on getting things done.

Hubby goes to Makro after lunch and comes back with some wine that needs delivering to our daughter, along with some grass seed from our garage as they are taking the opportunity to try and restore their lawn. He's going to take it over but I persuade him to let me go instead as he was the last person to see our grandson "live" at a distance. On the way there I listen to the radio and turn it up loud when Muse's "Feeling Good" comes on. Unfortunately, when I get there he's asleep, having started his nap late so I call my Mum who lives nearby to see if she needs anything. She does, so I go to the small supermarket and join the queue on the socially-distanced discs outside the store. It's the first time I've been in a supermarket since the restrictions and a lot has changed. Only a couple of customers are allowed in at a time; the aisles are one-way and the checkout staff are behind a Perspex screen. I sanitise my hands on returning to the car and drive to Mum's house.

I put her shopping on the doorstep and ring the bell, then I hear voices approaching from the side of her house. My nephew and his two children have been having a picnic in her garden - she never uses it as she's not stable enough on her feet, and they live in an apartment with no outside space. She had left the gate key under her mat for them so they could let themselves in without contact. On my way back to my daughter's house I swing by my sister's house with some flowers for my niece, whose dog died a few days ago - I thought they might cheer her up, especially as she's going to collect her ashes tomorrow. Both my sister and my niece come to the door to say hello, again from a distance.

Back at my daughter's my grandson has woken up and the two of them come out to her small front lawn to play while I watch from the road. He's walking so well now and has quite a few words, although he's reluctant to use them on command. He loves to pick daisies and keeps heading for the local cats, of which there are many, and has to be held back. It's bittersweet to watch him play and not be able to approach him. My daughter hands me the picture he made on Sunday and I hear him say Nana for the first time (I might have been accidental, but I'm claiming it!). I even speak to my son-in-law through the upstairs window where he is working. In a single visit I've seen all but one of my family, and although I'll have a lot to catch up with tomorrow it was well worth it.

I have a zoom call with my friends scheduled for 6pm which I take in the hammock with a G&T and some sweet potato crisps. Hubby is gardening and son is doing some university work - finally! Then it's dinner - jerk chicken/sweet potato - and everybody clears their plates. A final burst on the computer then, frankly, I'm exhausted. Last night's sleep was patchy and I'm not planning a late night.

Today I am grateful for having seen my family.
