Day 40 - Monday 27th April
Ugh. I just could not sleep last night. I was too warm, then my brain was too busy, then my bladder was too full. I saw 4am before I finally managed to drop off, then I was awake before my alarm. No point trying to go back to sleep; I get up and begin my day which turns out to be surprisingly productive. I exchange messages with my friend and then speak to her on the phone, as she's had a bad night struggling to catch her breath during coughing fits. I urge her to call the doctor and she agrees that she will.
I begin by applying for some jobs. There's one in particular, as head of comms for a business with a sustainability-centred value proposition, which looks particularly appealing and as well as submitting an online application I email the recruitment consultant. She explains that the role has been postponed until July, but we're going to talk anyway. I'm keen to maximise my chances of securing that role, but also to find out what else might be available. I find a couple of other good opportunities and apply for those too; the information economy and financial services both seem to be recruiting although presumably other industries are less buoyant.
My fruit and veg delivery arrives and it includes some exciting looking produce - yellow courgettes, stripy aubergine and the biggest pineapple I've ever seen. I grab some lunch and prepare ahead for dinner, using up an aubergine from the fridge that's beginning to turn a little mouldy. I'm really pleased with how little food waste we're creating at the moment - it really shows up how easy access to food makes you lazy about using it mindfully. Not knowing when you'll next be able to secure fresh supplies means you are far more disciplined about using things up before they turn.
I speak to my sister, who is wondering what to do about the holiday she's booked for August; I suggest she sits tight until nearer the time as the situation is so fluid. We talk about getting Mum an Amazon Echo or Google Dot for company and I happen to have one I bought as an add-on to the TV we got her for Christmas; I arrange it drop it round when I pick up my breadmaker tomorrow. I have a call with the climate change partnership and do some prep for tomorrow's board meeting where I will be proposed as co-chair, then catch up on some admin. I get a message from my friend who has been sent to the Covid testing centre - it will be the first time she has left the house for weeks and she's clearly feeling apprehensive.
Yoga tonight - but zoom drops out about three quarters of the way through. My teacher kindly emails me the recording she made of the class so I can complete it later. After dinner I speak to my friend about her trip to the testing centre. It was clearly quite traumatic, having to walk further than she could comfortably do with both compromised lungs and a bad back and being treated by people in PPE. They tested her for Covid but the results will take a couple of days; having scanned her chest they were certain she has had it though. I feel so bad for her that she has to do all this alone. The PM is back at work today, sounding and looking fine but she's still croaky and weak; although he was hospitalised I feel she probably had it worse. Hubby and I watch the latest Men in Black movie - some welcome mindless escapism. I hope to sleep better tonight.
Today I am grateful for the invitation to interview I received for an application I submitted last week.
