Day 42 - Wednesday 29th April

I struggled to get to sleep again but finally the Calm app worked its magic and I wake just after 7. My son emerges bleary eyed, asks for advice on how to stop the toilet cistern running in his en-suite, and disappears again. I spend the morning at the PC, progressing my application to join the NHS skill bank as an administrator and following up the connections I made last night, as well as signing up for a few more webinars and courses. I have received an email telling me I've been accepted to the NHS skill bank but shortly after I receive a phone call about my MMR status, indicating that not only have I not yet been accepted but that they hadn't received my last email. I agree to get the MMR vaccination and forward them the proof. Today is fairly free of commitments, apart from meeting the WOMAD crew on a zoom call later, but I make some plans for tomorrow as I will have groceries to drop off as well as the Google Dot for Mum.

I prepare ahead for dinner and put some apple slices in the dehydrator my friend dropped off a couple of weeks ago (in all honesty I've no idea how long it was!) then attempt to wake my son. The lunchtime news informs me that Boris Johnson and his fiancee have been safely delivered of a son (apparently somewhat premature but seemingly in good health) and that the UK's death rates from Covid-19 are on track to be the worst in Europe. This is likely to be enough news for me today - last night's workshop confirmed my view that too much bad news is bad for mental resilience, and I'm working hard to stay in my "sphere of influence", sharing what positivity I can find. Hubby is up and has retired to the living room; it worries me that he has the TV on news channels all day, giving his life an unrelenting soundtrack of coronavirus news and speculation.

The afternoon is spent on job applications, and sorting out my application for the coronavirus job protection scheme. I've furloughed myself from my Limited Company from March 1st and can claim 80% of what I was paid the previous March. I have to pass a resolution confirming the furlough and then complete and online application which is pretty straightforward. But in collecting the data I realise that there's an error in my payroll software, which doesn't show my pay from February even though my online PAYE account does. I submit an earlier year amendment from the software, as per the online help on the HMRC website.

I have one last look at the many emails from job-hunting sites, and spot one from 2to3days which is sitting in my others folder. I haven't checked them for a while and when I open the email I'm immediately excited by the first job mentioned, which is a communications programme manager for a climate change charity. It's nearly time for my zoom call with my friends, so I grab a G&T and sit down to begin it, planning to finish it after the call. But when 6pm comes and I log in, nobody joins me. One friend messages to say she's on a work call, but the other just isn't there. It transpires that my other friend forgot; I don't mind at all as I'm itching to get back to the job application.

For dinner we have a Mediterranean meze - home-made moussaka from the freezer for hubby and hoummous and fattoush for my son and me, with spicy potatoes to share. It's a little late because our online shop arrives halfway through cooking - sadly without any of the flour I ordered. After dinner I was due to speak to my friend who had CV, but she's feeling too tired so we defer until tomorrow. Hubby and I watch a documentary about the Hubble space telescope which contains incredible images from the furthest reaches of space.

Today I am grateful for new supplies.
