Day 43 - Thursday 30th April

Today Captain Tom turns 100 and I read that the Queen has awarded him an honorary promotion to Colonel for his fantastic fundraising effort which has now reached over £30M. I think that is lovely, but I can't help wishing she'd made him a Major. The day ahead is busy, but sadly way behind Tom's in its level of achievement.

First - an expedition. I have a bread maker to pick up, groceries to drop at my Mum's, a Google Dot for my Mum to drop at my sister's and my grandson's pocket money to deliver. I achieve all of this with appropriate social distancing and am home in time for my first zoom event of the day - an informative session on One Plant Living from Bioregional.

A brief break for lunch and then a webinar from The Eden Project on Group Resilience which I have to leave before the end as I have another session to attend, on Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting. Then a socially-distanced visit from a friend to pick up some gifts she's purchased from my online shop and to exchange books we have borrowed from each other. Fortunately we can enjoy our coffees under the veranda, out of the rain, although it's still pretty cold by recent standards. She and I talk a little about my idea to hold a mini festival to replace WOMAD - she has some great ideas for content but we haven't found the right name yet.

Back to my desk for the final training of the day - a session from Wix on how to optimise your storefront. I've got it into my head that I need to re-organise my office as I'm fed up with having shelves of cardboard boxes in my video background, so I move it all around so that the sofa is behind me. Since the door is in the middle of the room my workspace and the sofa is now on one side, and all the clutter of my stock, photographic equipment and packaging materials on the other. It already feels calmer; now I need some better artwork on the walls and to work out how to avoid looking like an Oompa Loompa on the video - probably a different bulb in my task light.

I have yoga at 6, which is also better in the new set-up which feels much more zen - if that's not mixing metaphors. After dinner of ramen I return to my desk to call my friend and buy new building and contents insurance. I don't restrict myself to Compare the Market this time as the Meerkat benefits seem to have less value when we're unable to visit the cinema or restaurants, but I can't find a better deal independently. Our wind-down viewing tonight is Wild Arabia, showcasing a much wider variety of wildlife than I expected to find in an area I thought was mostly empty desert.

Tonight I am grateful that I can still explore the World through TV.
