Day 48 - Wednesday 6th May

Slept really badly and awake feeling terrible, which is less than ideal when I have an interview. I push on and spend the morning preparing - finishing my 10 minute presentation, rehearsing answers to anticipated questions and familiarising myself with the organisation. The interview went pretty well as far as I could tell - body language is hard to read on a Teams call, but it over-ran its hour. I was honest about my shortfall in experience of working directly in the public sector which I'm sure will be my main handicap, but we'll see.

A late lunch and then a quick trip to the post box to mail an order and a flying visit to my friend's doorstep to pick up some onions she got me and drop off some tooth tablets. Then some gardening - accompanied by a helicopter passing frequently overhead. I later find out that there was a fight involving a machete in a road nearby and a possibly unrelated chase leading to the arrest in a town centre park of a young man caught dealing drugs. I listen to the daily briefing, which announces we now have the second highest death rate after the USA but insists on focusing attention on the plan to lift the lockdown and get people back to work. The restrictions are due to be reviewed tomorrow and the PM has hinted at some being lifted from Monday. Too soon? Who knows. It's clear that the hospitals are coping with the volume of admissions now, although there are still PPE shortages, and the Nightingale pop-up hospitals are being mothballed. However deaths in care homes continue to escalate and their residents aren't routinely hospitalised. Later it's announced that Debenhams won't be reopening its local branch, leading to the loss of 1000 jobs. It's clear the economic implications of an extended lockdown are dire, but surely lives are more important?

My son is very late up today, only just in time for dinner; we have a potato and mushroom bake by Jamie Oliver and hubby has Zanzibar chicken curry using spices we brought back from a holiday there. After dinner I speak to my friend who had coronavirus and she sounds as though she has entirely recovered her mojo; although she is still coughing she's worked out how to use her nebuliser to head off an anticipated bout of breathlessness which has clearly cheered her up no end. She's desperate to visit her Mum; they recently lost her Dad although she's relieved it was before CV as he was in a care home and it would have been agony for everybody not to be able to visit. She's hoping to be able to let herself in the side gate and sit at opposite ends of the garden for a chat. Probably not within the current guidelines but much safer than shopping in a supermarket where it's really difficult to maintain social distancing.

We have a supermarket order due tomorrow, so we add all the things we'd like and hope for the best. The flour I put in the trolley when I first booked it is no longer available - they are out of all types of wheat flour now. Everything else looks good for now, but there are bound to be some omissions and substitutions. Hubby and I watch a documentary about wildlife in the Arabian peninsula before bed.

Today I am grateful for the interview.
