Day 51 - Saturday 9th May
Another beautiful sunny day. After chatting last night to my friend who works in recruitment, I spend the morning adding a cover note to my CV and resubmitting one of my applications from yesterday which didn't give me the chance to add a separate cover note. Genius! I also check my business bank account, to find that my furlough payment has been received from the government, which is most welcome. Encouraged by the response I received from a local business I contacted yesterday I send a message to another on LinkedIn that is offering CSR accreditation. Then I organise an anniversary gift for hubby. That done, I treat myself to half an hour in the garden to top up my vitamin D. There's a growing theory that vitamin D deficiency leads to worse outcomes for those infected with Covid-19 and mine has been low in the past; it certainly won't do me any harm to make some.
After lunch I pot up some of my seedlings and generally potter around the garden, then use the tyre pump I borrowed from my sister to get my tyres back to pressure so that I can use my bike. I'm a nervous cyclist but I feel the reduction in traffic gives me a great opportunity to build my confidence. I also don't feel like I'll be taking buses any time soon, so it will be good to have a faster alternative to walking! I get some laundry done and prepare ahead for tonight's dinner as I'm due to have an online G&T with my friend at 6pm. She messages me just after we're due to have our call to let me know she has gone to see her Mum - at a distance of course - for the first time in around 6 weeks. Her Mum doesn't use computers and has been very isolated, so I'm really happy she made the choice. I sit in the sun with my G&T and take a call from a customer for my online shop who is unable to use Paypal, so I agree to find a solution and message her back.
I am still committed to avoid places where I may encounter large numbers of people, but we're out of potting compost. Fortunately I remember seeing somebody post on Facebook that he'll deliver it. I find him and arrange that, and I also spot a post from a company delivering afternoon tea. I ask if they can deliver one to me and one to my friend in Wokingham, so we can enjoy them together. Wokingham is outside their normal delivery area but when they find out she lives alone and is recovering from CV they agree to do it. I love how companies are prepared to go the extra mile in this crisis. I also message a couple of friends to see if they are up for the online whisky tasting my friend in Oz suggested - they are, so I set that up.
Today's briefing unveiled a new slogan from the government. Now we are to Stay Alert, Control the Virus, Save Lives … this seems extremely misguided to me. People are already not taking social distancing seriously and removing "stay home" from the advice will be seen as carte blanche by many to go wherever they want, whenever they want. There is spare capacity in the NHS, so the government clearly thinks we can afford more infections but I'm not prepared to join that group. Releasing the lockdown too early will lead to a second peak and ultimately lead to restrictions being in place longer.
We enjoy a barbeque tonight, possibly the last time for a while as the weather is forecast to get cooler tomorrow. Today I am grateful for the kindness of local businesses.
