Day 81 - Monday 8th June

Three weeks today I will start my new job. I have a pretty clear week and a long list of things I'd like to get tidied up before I return to full-time employment. I check when I get up and my son is still in bed; he materialises around 8.30 so that's a whole night's sleep on regular timezone - haven't been this excited about him sleeping through the night since he was a baby! Hubby is up by about 9 so that's the whole family on the same schedule - for now at least. I go to pack the orders that came in yesterday and realise that one of the glass jars of hand sanitiser I bought has cracked in transit so I message the seller to ask for a refund. The orders are packed and postage paid online, all ready to go.

I get a message from my friend who is feeling worse again, this time with a temperature as well as a UTI. She will need a prescription picked up from the pharmacy around lunch time and I check to see what else she needs - she's not feeling like food but fancies some strawberry yoghurts. I have lunch before I go this time as it was mid-afternoon when I got back last time. I manage to find yoghurts at the nearby Tesco express but as usual am dismayed by the lack of attention to social distancing - one-way system clearly marked in the aisles but nobody bothers to follow it. I take my gardening gloves this time so I can weed my friend's drive which is full of flowering nettles. I pick up her prescription, this time without delays, and return with it. She's feeling down, and I don't blame her - she's been sick for three months now.

Today New Zealand has officially declared itself Covid-free and all restrictions have been lifted except for the closure of its borders. However, if a flight left New Zealand for Heathrow the passengers would still be required to self-isolate for 14 days, although to reach their isolation address they could travel by public transport where the could potentially be infected, especially since the wearing of masks on public transport won't be mandatory for another week. The UK airlines have launched a legal challenge to the government's isolation order. Most of today I spent unsubscribing from job search emails and cleaning up my inbox.

I prepare dinner ahead of time - bean and cider cassoulet, to which hubby will add gammon - so that I can do my usual yoga class. It's ready when I finish, but my son is still working on an essay so we delay it for half an hour. It's lovely to see how enthusiastic he is about his studies. Hubby has made sourdough batons to go with dinner, and our son talks us through the arguments in his philosophy essay while we eat - he has chosen the essay question "Is it morally right to have children in a world afflicted by climate change?" After dinner I feed my sourdough starter and set off a regular loaf in the breadmaker before watching a couple more episodes of Normal People.

Tonight I am grateful that my son enjoys his studies.
