Day 94 - Sunday 21st June

Woke up too early but managed to get back to sleep before waking again and remembering what happened last night. Checked the news over breakfast but there's no new information beyond last night's speculation. No statements from official sources at all, in fact, beyond tweets from the PM and Home Office minister and a rather lame TV interview with the local MP who seemed not to be familiar with the town at all which was surprising as he seems pretty good normally. With cruel irony, while looking for more information from social media, I learn that yesterday was World Refugee Day - my town has a reputation for welcoming refugees and being a vibrant multicultural community but I fear that this will be compromised by the fear that follows events like yesterday's. Some of the comments left on social media blame the attack specifically on these factors.

I had registered for a yoga class to celebrate World Yoga Day and I dress in my exercise gear without showering but I couldn't get on the zoom call so I work on updating this blog ... over the last few days I've got a bit behind. It later turns out that the yoga class was a re-run because my teacher's daughters needed her help to cook Fathers Day breakfast. At 12 I have a Facebook Room call with my friend in Australia and one of her friends who I haven't met except on Facebook. It's a drinks meeting but my G&T is mostly T. My son and his girlfriend appear during the call, looking for food. Since my attempt at croissants yesterday failed I tell them I'll prepare something after the call. It's exciting telling my friend all about the new job, although tempered by the horrible news of yesterday.

I make halloumi caesar salad for the veggies and put the remains of the chicken in the oven to roast for hubby. I make him a salad with hard boiled egg but a spot remains runny so I zap it in the microwave for 10 seconds; it bursts when I try to cut it. I didn't realise such a short burst would do that! After lunch I do some gardening - my tomatillos need re-potting and I have some blueberries to plant out. That turns into a bit of a mission - there's concrete below where I want to plan them and my upper body strength doesn't really work for digging. I swap jobs with hubby who is digging out weeds from the lawn, and we end up clearing all the ivy of the wall as well. It looks much better.

I finally shower just before 6, then spend a short time in my hammock listening to the news before preparing dinner. In other news today, President Trump has been speaking to a half empty stadium in Tulsa after lots of people booked tickets with no intention of attending. He was recorded saying that he had asked his people to hold back on coronavirus testing because "the more we test, the more cases we find". Unbelievable!

I'm cooking enchiladas for the veggies and hubby is cooking his own steak. We reminisce about our travel adventures over dinner, concentrating on the most scary and hair-raising escapades. It's a welcome distraction from recent events. The name of the first victim from Saturday is announced - he's a teacher from a school in Wokingham. Before bed I prepare sourdough and hubby and I sit down to watch a docu-drama about an unsolved murder, made by the partner of a friend. We watch the late news but there's nothing more about the attack.

Tonight I am grateful that none of my immediate family and friends were caught up in yesterday's atrocity.
