Day 97 - Wednesday 24th June
I've decided I need more exercise but it's too hot during the day so I'm up and out at 8am for a brisk walk. I head for the new development that was built on the site of a Victorian reservoir and which I campaigned against at the time. It's actually not too bad now it's there, they retained the interesting buildings like the pump house and converted those and the new build is sympathetic. There's a small copse at the back which people were keen to retain for wildlife but I don't feel like venturing in alone.
I receive an email from my new boss - he expects me in the office three days next week. I'm not sure how I feel about that; obviously it will be great to meet all my colleagues but it will be the first time I have been in such close proximity with strangers. The sail arrives and we gather in the garden to work out the logistics of installing it. There's a lot of trigonometry. We're hampered by an electric screwdriver that's not fully charged and there's a pause while we wait for it to recharge. I go indoors and leave the boys to finish it. It looks pretty good but we're struggling with the single guy rope that isn't really enough, plus the 2.5m pole won't extend beyond 2m because the retainer clip doesn't work on one segment. It's OK at 2m though.
Now that we have fresh coriander I make Ramen for lunch. It's much cooler on the veranda with the sail up, although I'd prefer it if the pole was higher as it would obscure less of the sky - I love to watch the red kits soaring overhead. Mid-afternoon we have a meeting of the Comms and Engagement team of the climate change partnership. One of our team has been very keen and done a lot of prep which makes things really easy. Once that's done I spend an hour in the garden sunbathing. I manage to break the sun lounger by trying to lay on it flat; fortunately we have another one that looks really old but seems to work fine.
My friend comes over after work to pick up the groceries I ordered for her, and we meet for a gin on the veranda. She's managed to make an appointment to get her hair cut and coloured, which she's very excited about. I'm keen to get mine cut too but my niece does it and I'm not sure of the rules - although if households are allowed to mingle I think that probably means she can.
Because of my friend's visit we're a bit late having dinner - another barbeque - but it's so hot that it is probably a blessing. We sit down just after 9 and almost immediately our Tesco delivery arrives. It wasn't due until 10pm so I ask the driver if he would mind just unloading it onto our porch and I'll deal with it after we've finished dinner. He doesn't seem to mind. It takes a while to clear up and put the shopping away; I'm glad it arrived before 11pm. It feels like it has been a long day.
Today I am grateful for enthusiastic volunteers.
